São Bento Monastery Ruins
Sobre a AtraçãoAboutAcerca de
Nestled among the hills of São Bento village, about 7 km from downtown Maragogi, lie the silent remains of the São Bento Monastery — one of Alagoas’ oldest historical landmarks. Built in the 17th century by Benedictine monks, it once sheltered travelers on their route between Olinda and Porto Calvo and served as a lookout to spot pirates approaching the coast. Over the centuries, the monastery was abandoned and slowly reclaimed by nature. Today, its weathered stone walls and scattered ruins form a landscape of peace and reflection, framed by lush greenery and the shimmering blue of the sea. Recognized as an archaeological site by Iphan (National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage), the ruins preserve the memory of faith and resilience that shaped Maragogi’s early days. Entry is free, and those who climb the steep path are rewarded with one of the most breathtaking panoramic views on the coast.
